Our free range hens

Here are the girls who lay delicious eggs and entertainment.

New Bertha(the black one - read the story of new Bertha here Chapter1,Chapter2 and Chapter 3), Ethel, Daisy and Choc Choc.
The girls again.

Daisy on the march.

Bertha doing what comes naturally. Can you see her?

How about now?

If she can't find a spot like this we have to shut her in the hen house so she feels safe.

One of our human chickens. Cameron wanted me to photograph him jumping. Our camera is just too slow.

Weekly training 15Sep-21Sep

First week in about 7 that I have managed every single session. Normally I am pretty consistant but with colds, strained muscles??? and pool closures it's been hard.
Hopefully back on track.

Swim

3 sessions total 4950m - highlights 400m with band (no paddles or fistgloves) and 2x200m fistgloves and no legs.

bike

3 sessions on turbo - 2 rebuilding aerobic engine low heart rate 90+rpm one strength at very lopw heart rate total= 37.5 miles

run

3 runs 5 miles very enjoyable especially Sunday morning - I ran in th daylight and the sunshine - believe me for somebody who normally runs at 5.30am this is a big deal.
total=15miles

Big news of the week, I am doing an olympic distance race in the summer for definite. I really couldn't face ding the local sprints again. But because we want to go and live somewhere in Europe in July 2011 I had to change my plans. I want to do another Ironman before we go and my plan was to do olympic , then half ironman the next summer and then Ironman the next. With the emphasis on completing comfortably, no medical tents. I'm also been suggesting that when we go back to Europe for 2 years I may get the chance to do Lanzarote Ironman almost 20years after I first did it and this time I want to be fit.

The chickens

The more I see the natural behaviours from our free range hens - the more I am angry and disgusted with the hen/ chicken farms/factories. Our hens are let out first thing in the morning and are only shut in when we all go out and at night. They are even free to lay their eggs where they want. They tend to make a nest hidden in the undergrowth. It helps them that I am always cutting down and pruning trees which gives them an ever changing environment. To see them scratch away and socialise and sun bath together they have even made a large hole in the ground at the base of the pepper tree for a dust bath. This is so deep that they are almaost underground.

When I think about hens and chickens forced to live crammed in cages makes me really angry and sick to my stomach. It didn't help my mood when I watched Jamie Oliver's program on the subject.
