Our free range hens

Here are the girls who lay delicious eggs and entertainment.

New Bertha(the black one - read the story of new Bertha here Chapter1,Chapter2 and Chapter 3), Ethel, Daisy and Choc Choc.
The girls again.

Daisy on the march.

Bertha doing what comes naturally. Can you see her?

How about now?

If she can't find a spot like this we have to shut her in the hen house so she feels safe.

One of our human chickens. Cameron wanted me to photograph him jumping. Our camera is just too slow.

Weekly training 15Sep-21Sep

First week in about 7 that I have managed every single session. Normally I am pretty consistant but with colds, strained muscles??? and pool closures it's been hard.
Hopefully back on track.

Swim

3 sessions total 4950m - highlights 400m with band (no paddles or fistgloves) and 2x200m fistgloves and no legs.

bike

3 sessions on turbo - 2 rebuilding aerobic engine low heart rate 90+rpm one strength at very lopw heart rate total= 37.5 miles

run

3 runs 5 miles very enjoyable especially Sunday morning - I ran in th daylight and the sunshine - believe me for somebody who normally runs at 5.30am this is a big deal.
total=15miles

Big news of the week, I am doing an olympic distance race in the summer for definite. I really couldn't face ding the local sprints again. But because we want to go and live somewhere in Europe in July 2011 I had to change my plans. I want to do another Ironman before we go and my plan was to do olympic , then half ironman the next summer and then Ironman the next. With the emphasis on completing comfortably, no medical tents. I'm also been suggesting that when we go back to Europe for 2 years I may get the chance to do Lanzarote Ironman almost 20years after I first did it and this time I want to be fit.

The chickens

The more I see the natural behaviours from our free range hens - the more I am angry and disgusted with the hen/ chicken farms/factories. Our hens are let out first thing in the morning and are only shut in when we all go out and at night. They are even free to lay their eggs where they want. They tend to make a nest hidden in the undergrowth. It helps them that I am always cutting down and pruning trees which gives them an ever changing environment. To see them scratch away and socialise and sun bath together they have even made a large hole in the ground at the base of the pepper tree for a dust bath. This is so deep that they are almaost underground.

When I think about hens and chickens forced to live crammed in cages makes me really angry and sick to my stomach. It didn't help my mood when I watched Jamie Oliver's program on the subject.

Weekly training 8Sep-14Sep

Weekly Training
Swim2 sessions with fist gloves. Alternating 200's and 100's making me concentrate on stroke. Alternating adding shorter stuff now in fistgloves with no legs (held together -try it and see)managed 4x100 and no fistgloves with band did 2x200m on Monday around legs. Aiming to be able to swim with the band and fistgloves (again try it). Needed to swim backup session on Friday night but pool was unexpectedly closed when I turned up.3200
Bike 2x60min McCormack style intervals I've dropped down gears to concentrate on increasing my cadence to above 90- the problem I found is that I often found myself without a gear that suited the cadence and hr I needed to be in , often the gear was too high or low. So I am warming up and they see what gear I can sustain. Again I used to this before the hr monitor. 1x47.5min strength on trainer trying to do 40+cadence in 53-12 whilst keeping hr as low as possible around 130. 37.5miles
Run1x4mile 2x5miles(running as I feel )times are getting quicker. OLd niggle in ankle has come back to haunt me.14miles

Weekly core Training
Swim cords2 sessions Building specific strength - 11 on each arm
Back2 sessions
Abs2 sessions 8 different exercises based on crunches and leg lifts
Weights2 sessions with dumbbells
Push ups2 sessions - some moving side to side and Hindu push ups
Stretching6 sessions

We've been discussing future plans this week. The major one that we are planning is temporary move back to Europe(not the UK) for Teresa to teach in an international schoolprobably in about 3 years time. The reasons to do more travel, learn a language, give the children and ourselves new experiences and give us something to look forward to. We are very happy where we are, especially me and the move would mean once again stepping outside the comfort zone but it is something we have to do or it will become a lifelong regret.

The curse continues

I knew I could only get 2 swims in this week because I was out seeing a client in one of my usual day time slots and my back up session Friday was a no go because of a swim meet. So I wasn't to down about it especially as I had swum really in the sessions I had done.

Came to do my strength session on the bike and turbo wednesday night, all was going well, then I punctured. This happens sometimes and I just accepted fixed the puncture and put it back on my bike. Friday I was putting my bike back on the turbo for training that might, and I accidently knocked the fans on the turbo and snapped one off. My turbo is a 17year windtrainer and although I've tried 2 others I just like the feel and load and the way it forces me into good circles. It has also been repaired by a plastic welder because I can't get parts for it. I glued the broken bit with a super strong glue, it looked as good as new. I left my bike at the sideof it went away and then heard a crash, Cameron had fiddled with it and the bike had crashed on top of it almost destroying one of the fans. I was very angry. I had no option but to carry on using it now until I can no longer use it.

Friday evening I was really enjoying my session and then it happened again , PUNCTURE!!!! I went and bought a new inner tube. But it means I have to do a bit of cycling on Saturday my normal day off, my Saturday is already because I have to go to see a client this afternoon because she doesn't have an internet connection in her shop so I have to show her how to use her website at her house. You wouldn't think this is a problem but it is an online shop for existing baby stuff shop. I have advised her that I don't think she is going to be able to do it successfully without the connection in her shop.

I can only advise and as long as I have done everything I can, I just accept payment and she has to do the rest.
